Dr. Joel Jones to speak at Fort Lewis College's Fall Convocation
Dr. Joel Jones
The official beginning to the school year at Fort Lewis College is marked by Fall Convocation. The event, which brings together the incoming freshman class and (new this year) transfer students, will take place on Friday, August 26 at 4 p.m. in Whalen Gym.
Dr. Joel Jones, former president of Fort Lewis College, will be the Convocation Speaker. Dr. Jones became Fort Lewis’ fifth president in 1988. He served as president for a decade and presided over many important milestones in the College’s history. For example, it was Dr. Jones who made the decision to change the nickname and mascot of FLC from the Raiders to the Skyhawks in 1994.
Dr. Jones is also an active member of the Durango community. He has served with such organizations as First National Bank of Durango, Mercy Medical Center and the United Way of Southwest Colorado.
Following Fall Convocation, Fort Lewis College’s newest students and their families are invited to join the College community for a picnic held just outside Whalen Gym.
